Frames from Our Weekend

by Landis Carey on October 31, 2011

For me, winter is a time for rejuvenation and rest. It’s a time when the world slows a little, allowing those wrapped in its blankets space and reprieve from the expectations that warm spring and summer days often carry. I feel myself slowing once the weather cools. My appetite changes; I yearn for warm soups and hearty stews served with warm bread.

This year winter arrived in the middle of a lovely fall spell: leaves were in the midst of turning and mums were out in abundance. It wasn’t yet a permanent arrival; rather, it was a fierce reminder to enjoy each and every one of the sunny, temperate fall days that remain.

As our power flicked off early on Saturday, our weekend became an adventure. We lit candles, gathered firewood, located our lantern and dressed in our warmest layers. The snow spun around on the other side of the windows and, every so often, the snap of a tree was heard. As the afternoon turned to evening we spent time watching the light fade and our interior warm from the flickering glow of candles.

Much of the snow that fell is now melted, so now it’s time to head out and enjoy the sunshine, remembering just how harsh and quickly winter can arrive.
