Benjamin Moore Soot

Benjamin Moore Soot

Ever since visiting Birch in San Francisco I’ve been obsessed with dark, inkwell-colored walls and wondering where in our home we can add such dramatic color.

So, because of the 9″ baseboard molding and the room’s four windows (with spectacular, thick white trim), I think our bedroom might be the perfect candidate. Our sheets and pillows are white and there’s a natural flax-colored linen blanket atop the bed. The room’s curtains will have to be changed—they’re from Ikea and were never a long-term solution—but our furniture is a richly-colored walnut and our lamps are white. So, it’s kind of the perfect setting for a cozy room complete with dark, soot-colored walls.

Friends, what do you think? Do you love the idea as much as I do?

Two thumbs up! My living room is now an ‘inkwell’ color & while it’s not finished yet, I love the look. Especially with thick white trim, so dramatic, yet tastefully neutral as well. DO IT! :-)

Your living room was such an inspiration to me, Jessica! I LOVE that space and the molding you added!

I’m about to do my guest room (gets the best light in the house) a nice deep grey and can’t wait. Love the soot color.

Sadly not yet (and I still need to download the pics from my camera of my headboard from forever ago!) I’m having trouble working up the motivation to actually tackle the project! lol

Go for it! I painted a bathroom (ceiling and walls) high gloss black when I was in my early 20′s and found the space felt larger… and sexy. I was interested in seeing how the same would translate to a living space if I went matte, but was afraid to come off kitschy. About three years ago I visited The Kitchen Cafe in Colorado and their upstairs lounge is painted in a matte ink color… The impact was exactly what I had hoped for and inspired me to jump. The rest is history. I love, love, love – love, love my two black walls!!!

Totally love your description of your bathroom transformation! I definitely think the color will make our space feel bigger — right now the white walls blend with the white woodwork and the ceiling. I can’t wait for the walls to be defined and the woodwork to top!

Yes, I love the idea! I think the effect can be surprisingly cozy, which is perfect for a bedroom.

Well, hubby offered to paint the room for me in the next few weeks, so pictures soon, hopefully :)

the south wall of my bedroom is painted like this, and one night I realized that it also worked well as a chalk board. Since then I have had a lot of fun drawing pictures and leaving notes.

Really? Is it chalkboard paint? That’s fun!

Yes, love it! I’m still considering for our living room, as well. I’ve narrowed it down to Ben Moore’s Mysterious (very similar to Soot) and Flint, which is a little lighter (both from Affinity deck). Can we talk soon? Miss you!

I think it would look AWESOME! I can’t wait to see it…especially since i tend to copy everything you do at the moment. LOL. I feel almost creeperish now that I’ve completed my dining room in Surf Blue.

What a nice thing to say Nicole! I’m 99.9% sure we’re going with the Soot, so I’ll post pictures later this season. How do you like the Surf Blue?! Please send pictures! landis@mintpeach.com
