Décor Hunting at San Francisco’s Birch

Birch San Francisco

On my last full day in San Francisco I met up with Caitlin of Sacramento Street for an afternoon coffee. We’d met the previous week at Terrain in Philadelphia and laughed so hard together I knew I had to find time for a quick chat while visiting her hometown.

When I mentioned I was on my way to the Hayes Valley neighborhood, she insisted I visit one of her favorite stores: Birch. And boy, I’m sure glad I did. What a treat! It was Terrain meets rich, moody wall color and Mint Peach pottery. It was sexy and dark yet airy and light. Not only did I fall in love with Birch’s offerings but you could also smell the fresh florals from outside the shop’s door. Love at first smell kind of thing.

Take a stroll through the images below and think about what strikes you most. I’ll do the same and then divulge why it is that I’m sharing all of this.

My immediate draw to the store, besides the beautiful smells all around, were the dark, ink-colored walls. Everything popped: the florals, the white ceramics and, of course, the warm, weathered floors. It’s a misconception that dark rooms feel smaller. They don’t, not at all. These dark walls highlighted what light did come into the space, defined the room and worked oh so well with the greenery throughout.

The Birch interior may very well be the inspiration for a future home project. Sounds crazy, but when I tire of our peacock dining room, we might dive into the inkwell.

What do you think? Do you guys love it?

I’m so glad you posted this! I love the dark walls…I have been debating whether to incorporate this dark/inky/grey/blue color in my own living room for the last few weeks, and this completely solidifies my decision!

Jilly Jill! Your comment just makes my morning :) Let’s catch up soon! And I’m so glad someone else out there is loving this color. When I saw it I immediately started wondering which room to paint!
