Reader Question: Colored Kitchen Towels?

by Landis Carey on August 5, 2011

On a recent post about How I Forgot We Are Living Without Paper Towels,  sweet Meaghin from Cheery Observations chimed in to ask about the kind of towels I use to fill the vacancy that not using paper towels leaves behind. She wondered if I purchase white ones, after all they turn a little dingy over time, or if I choose a color.

When thinking about the question, I realized I’ve never even consider color when buying kitchen towels. And it’s not because I don’t want color, but mainly because the most absorbent ones are usually white. And my top criteria when purchasing kitchen towels is absorbency.

What happens when they turn dingy? I toss them into the wash with one of my favorite cleaning products: Nature Bright Laundry Booster from Shaklee. I don’t use bleach or any other type of harsh cleaner in our home and Nature Bright does a pretty good job. Not everything turns out super white all the time (take a peek at that top towel!) and I’m okay with that; it’s a cleaning towel, after all.

My favorite workhorse kitchen towel is a bar mop towel and I was so sad to discover that my go-to is no longer sold at Bed, Bath & Beyond. Bummer, huh? Stay tuned over the next few weeks for a Home Experiment as I test out few new brands.

Thanks for your question, Meaghin!

Also, a giant shout out to a dear reader who is on her first week of living without paper towels. Go you! Can’t wait to hear how it all works out!

Friends: Do you have a favorite brand of kitchen towel? Please share! I’d love to add your reco to my little experiment.

Fantastic! I look forward to kicking my remaining paper towel rolls to the curb!

Hi Landis,
I finally got around to ordering the bar towels (that you linked to in a previous post). So far so good–they’re super absorbent and to counteract any stains, I’m just going to wash all of the towels separately with non-chlorine bleach. Thanks again for your recommendation/inspiration!!
