Collections versus Clutter

Books and Magazines

I sat down this morning at 7:30 to do a few posts and it was an hour later when I realized my mind was wandering. I was distracted by everything around me: business cards and bills on my desk and the newspapers and magazines scattered on the floor.

I’ve mentioned several times over the past few weeks that to prepare for a new Apartment Therapy project I’ve been reading old Home Cures and catching-up on past videos. It was during that study that I came across a conversation about collections and clutter, which was exactly what came to mind this morning as I scanned our space:

There’s a difference between collections and clutter. Clutter is uncared for, taking up space you could use for something else. It’s somehow putting a weight on your life. A collection is something that’s cared for and gives enjoyment not only to you but to those people who come into contact with it.

The more I think about it, this is a great way to evaluate any possession you keep. Perhaps that object was once apart of a collection, and although it still is, because you no longer value that collection in the same way, it’s now become clutter.

Is that how you feel about your collection of books? Your once treasured titles are now weighing you down, holding you back from freeing up space for new books that are full of new, fresh ideas.

Who doesn’t want new, fresh ideas in their life? I certainly do! Consider this just another reason to figure out if that collection has become clutter.

Happy Friday, Friends! I hope everyone has something fun on tap for the weekend!

Love this! When it comes to ‘collections’, we always ask “How are you honoring this?” – hidden in a drawer, or a box isn’t honoring collectibles.

Hi, Jackie! Thanks so much for stopping by. I really like your tip to ask: “How are you honoring this?” That’s brilliant and absolutely true!

I love this distinction and always struggle to strike the balance between a collected, lived in look and clutter-free minimalism. Also, love the tip Jackie provided up there. How true!

P.S. I’ve been traveling most of July and caught up on a bunch of your posts just now. It’s always such a treat to read your thoughts and experience snippets of your life through your photos. Every time I visit, I am reminded how much I love the space you’ve built here.

Kayla, thank you for these incredibly kind words! My goodness, I’m blushing!

By the way, your travel photos are AMAZING…seriously wonderful! Looks like you two had a wonderful time away. Welcome home! :)
