Frames from Our Weekend

by Landis Carey on June 27, 2011

After several weeks of traveling here and there, both hubby and I were in town this weekend and it was great! We worked on our third floor home office space, attended to some overdue household business and also found time to go for an adventurous long run, visit Brooklyn, choose paint colors (and paint!) and play tennis. Looking back, I’m not really sure how we fit it all in!?

On Friday I posted about color inspiration for our third floor office space. Here are a few peeks at the pretty details of how we’re overhauling our space to be more functional and beautiful for both of us.

On Thursday morning, before I began pulling our two-room office space apart, every piece of furniture was pushed up against the walls and our work space utilized just one-half of the floor. Our red couch took up the largest portion of the vaulted-room, rendering the square-footage useless except for napping.

Additional challenges: Hubby’s books were a far stretch from his desk, wires were dictating how my desk functioned and also the blank walls and white furniture were just too bleak. All-in-all the space was making me nuts.

Two things the overhaul included—besides adding color and additional lamps, moving furniture and discarding old papers—were going both wireless and paperless. Yes, it did cost a little money and, yes, it will take time to digitize our paperwork but both outlays are worth it: Because I eliminated so many wires, now my desk doesn’t have to be positioned against a wall and we also don’t have to purchase a giant, heavy filing cabinet.

And, yes, for those of you concerned, we do have an external hard drive for back-up.

So far, we both feel better about the space, but we recognize it’s going to take more effort to be completely organized. Admittedly, I haven’t done a great job of establishing a filing system and inflow/outflow that can easily be managed and evolve as our needs change.

This weekend was a giant lesson in office organization and space planning. I feel like I’ve learned so many things from the experience, too many to share in this one post!

A few topics I can blog about over the next few months as we wrap-up this project: space planning for multi-functional rooms, paperless filing systems, wireless electronics, the needs of a home office (especially for entrepreneurial-types), chalkboard paint as well as color choices for creative hubs.

I hope everyone had a great weekend! What’s on the agenda for the week? Any upcoming travels?

Wonderful photos! Your light-filled home office/relaxing space is bright and good-looking, definitely invites you to go upstairs. The paperless filing system information will be of interest to me, as we have no filing space (except in the garage) and I would like to make better use of our garage. Wireless systems functioning well, make life easier.

Love it!!! When you’re ready, please share a full room view so we can see the ways all the colors & organization work together to form an effective and beautiful workspace. As always, so impressed with everything you do!!!
