Hella Jongerius: Design is Art within Boundaries

by Landis Carey on June 15, 2011

I learned a great deal about myself yesterday from watching this video of Dutch product designer Hella Jongerius speak about innovation, process and design. For her, art was too free; she likes the borders of design. And in explaining why she went to design school without having had a background in the subject, she says, for her, design is “art within boundaries.”

I can’t even begin to explain my own process in relation to her depth of understanding. I’m by no means at that point, but I found this video so fascinating—even after watching it five times—that I knew I had to share.

Moral of this post: Take a minute to listen to what Hella Jongerius has to say, and then the next time you’re faced with a purchase decision (any purchase decision), think about the product’s beauty and usefulness. Think about the designer behind that item and how well they designed that item to fulfill its purpose. Then answer the question: is it worth spending your money to purchase?
