Frames from Our Weekend

by Landis Carey on May 16, 2011

What a wonderful, precious weekend. It began on Friday with an outdoor dinner at The Rock Center Cafe and a Broadway show with my mom. Hubby joined us for dinner; it was a beautiful evening with a slight chill in the air. We hung around the house for much of Saturday: Mom reading and cooking, Hubby gardening and me in the pottery studio making a giant mess.

We woke up to rain on Sunday morning. It continued throughout the day, soaking everything in sight. After dropping Mom at the airport, I headed right back into the pottery studio to finish up a few glazes, load the kiln and set its timer.

After dinner around 7 we walked across the street to visit our neighbors. As we headed home, making our way to side door, I realized just how green and lush the outside world had become. Our path was nearly impassible, unless you’re a child about four years old. As I ducked and rounded the corner to discover the warm light streaming through the rain-soaked hydrangeas, I realized I had to capture it in that atmospheric condition at that moment. It was blue and hazy and set against the warm glow of our tiny but tall house.

The cool light shone off every surface. I’m convinced the day’s rain had nourished more plants to life, ones that hadn’t yet shown their blooming colors and others that are just getting underway.

The rain is set to continue for several days. I dream my herbs will be a foot tall once the storms pass; I’m dying for basil, mozzarella and tomato on toast.

I hope everyone had a nourishing, hydrating weekend as well!

What a lovely entry, I can just feel spring all over again when reading your descriptions and viewing those lush photos!

My weekend was taken up by three visiting high school pals. (We did some hydrating of our own, too.) In the middle of shopping Saturday afternoon at Fresh Market for that evening’s dinner of grilled strip steak and fresh veggies, the heavens opened up with roaring thunder and crackling lightning, so we ended up shopping at Fresh Market in the dark. Fortunately, one of the girls had a blank check in her wallet, so we were able to pay with that. While we were in the store, the temperature outside dropped 20 degrees! Later, we spent time looking in on, one of the other girls is a regular reader also.

I noticed the exact same thing this weekend! The rain seemed to awaken the green in a way that made me stop and say, “wow.”
