Living with Less: Lessons from What We’re Living Without

by Landis Carey on April 30, 2011

Remember all the items we’re pared back in Living with Less? The Vietnam Veterans picked up a load of boxes from our home this past Thursday, and as I packed the boxes I realized there were lessons to learn from the items we’re giving away. So, I decided to show Re-Nest readers a few things we’re living without as well as dish about what I’ve learned as they’ve gone out the door.

Below is the beginning of that Re-Nest post. Click here for full text.

As our Living with Less series comes to a close (don’t worry there are still a few weeks of paring back left!), I decided to begin dispersing what we’re living without. This morning the Vietnam Veterans will arrive to pick up the bulk of goods, so I spent much of yesterday organizing and itemizing what we’re donating. As I poked along, having mostly forgotten what I was parting with, I realized there was some good stuff in there! Read on for the purging lesson associated with each good.

This nicely sums up your Living with Less motto.
William Morris quotes “Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”
He was a British craftsman, early Designer and Poet whose designs generated the Arts and Crafts Movement in England. 1834-1896
Simple things last forever.

What a lovely quote, DEL. Thank you! You’ve mentioned you’ve been Living with Less. What are you going without these days?

I started with the kitchen. Donated lots of cooking items that I had not used in years. I’ve been moving the heart shaped cake pan around for at least 20 years. Why not let someone else have it.
Next, I tackled the closet. If it was not worn in the last 2-3 years, it went into the donation pile.
Funny, the husband was watching and got inspired on his side of the closet. Yeah!!!!!!
