Inspiration: Flashes of Black and White Ticking

by Landis Carey on April 13, 2011

This afternoon I’m working on a few sewing projects and getting in gear for June 5′s Open Studio Tour, which I’m really using to say “Hello, World” for my pottery as well as table linens. I’ve sold my work before, but it’s been for-ev-er, so I’m a little nervous.

I’ve been slightly obsessed with black and white ticking for some time. After all, it did take center stage in the post DIY Home: Easy-to-Sew Square Tablecloth. I’m totally digging its appearance in these images. The inspirational scenes are somehow softened by its stripes, don’t you think?

I’m thinking about taking an upholstery class. Hubby is dying for a chair to be added to our living room and I hate the thought of never being able to salvage a gem I happen to find.

And what about this bag? Anyone want to pack up and head to the beach? Oh, I dream of the day that’s even a possibility.

I liked the Upholstery class I took through 3rd Ward in Brooklyn. Not sure if the location would be convenient for you (it’s in Williamsburg and goes until 10 p.m.), but I’d definitely recommend it. In the intro class, you learn the basics and tackle a smaller project like a bench, ottoman, or simple chair. I’m thinking about signing up for the second level this summer, so I can do a hand-me-down armchair in our living room that’s in need of a facelift.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll definitely look into 3rd Ward. You’re right the location isn’t great but I’ve searched around here and haven’t found anything great. Maybe I’ll try to fit in the intro class before yours so I can join you!
