Frames from Our Weekend

by Landis Carey on March 28, 2011

I studied both photography and ceramics in college. I had no real previous artistic experience and I had no idea what I was doing but I loved it. Even after pursuing a masters degree and adventuring into my 30s, this is still the case: I cherish the time I spend being creative but I have no great intention for its outcome.

Today, whether I’m photographing for Mint Peach or throwing on my pottery wheel in our basement, I feel incredibly blessed to still enjoy these creative endeavors. Engaging my camera for Mint Peach has brought me great joy over recent weeks, even if the subject is a raw-looking wooden table pictured in our unfinished (and slightly scary) basement.

We spent much of our staycation visiting friends in NYC and Brooklyn; it was lovely, absolutely wonderful. We saw a cabaret, a comedy show and went to numerous dinners with new and old friends. We played paddle, went running and gave our Brooklyn condo a fresh coat of paint. We were active and inspired. What a special week. I’m sad it’s over.

We saw several inches of snow fall and 75-degree weather in both pulsing environments and the calm of our beloved town. We both rested from work and physically exerted ourselves in our running shoes. We read, watched movies and built a work table for our basement. The downstairs still smells of freshly cut wood. It’s nice, in a satisfying kind of way.

Inspiration comes in many forms. Perhaps it was the extremes of our week that inspired me to sign-up for the 2011 South Orange & Maplewood Artists Studio Tour. Or maybe it was the promise of spring and the realization that I was letting another season pass without engaging my love for clay.

So, I committed, paid the $40 and I’m ready to get my hands muddy! In order to crank out the pottery I hope to before the Sunday June 5th event, I needed a wedging table and additional workspace.

I’m loving its raw finish and pencil markings. This week I’ll cover it with canvas and get to work making serving dishes and dinnerware. It’s been years since I sold my work, but I have a deadline, inspiration and the space and time to create. I can’t wait to share the adventure with you all!

I hope everyone had a great weekend! Congratulations to those friends who are paring back and those of you moving into new homes! Can’t wait to hear about your adventures.
